Tropical Storm Wipha hits Vietnam, five dead

Heavy rain and storm continued in Vietnam over the weekend. Five people were reported dead while 13 were missing after the storm. So far 500mm rainfall was recorded and more is expected in 1-2 days.

This storm named as “Wipha” is a tropical  one and is believed to hit Vietnam hard. A storm warning was also circulated during last week.

The worst hit areas included Thanh Hoa, Quan Son district, Sichuan and Guangdong. In Quan Son one entire village was destroyed while land sliding occured in Sichuan. Around 800 soldiers were deployed to help out with relief activities.

Vietnam is among the most vulnerable nations to climate change impacts. It is one of nine countries that according to a International Panel on Climate Change report, will have at least 50 million people exposed to the impacts rainstorms and rising sea levels.
