Punjab’s new local government act

A notice was passed on Thursday by the Lahore High Court due to which the Punjab Government was asked to submit comments on a petition that challenged the Punjab Local Bill, 2019.

A counsel for the Lahore Mayor professed that the government introduced a new system of local bodies, putting away the existing local government institutions without allowing them to complete their term in authority.

The Punjab assembly passed two bills to replace the existing local bodies withy new government local bodies, in between the protests by the opposition parties, mainly the PML-N.

The government of Punjab decides to hold the election for the new government local bodies within one year.

According to the new system, thy village and mohalla councils would be elected through non-party election system, whereas election would be held on a party basis at tehsil and municipal level.
